Dit boek gaat over de vraag waarom softwareprojecten zo vaak mislukken. Er zijn zeer veel verwijzingen naar “The Mythical Man-Month (Fred Brooks)”!. Het software project wat besproken wordt is “Chandler” een PIM. Dat is nooit wat geworden. [7]

Fumbling the Future: How Xerox Invented, then Ignored, the First Personal Computer – Douglas Smith & Robert Alexander
Dit boek beschrijft het verhaal van Palo Alto Research Center, een onderzoekscentrum van Xerox, waar onderzoekers onder andere uitvonden: GUI, Muis, Ethernet, WYSIWYG (zie ook “Dealers of lightning”) . Dat alles kwam samen in de ontwikkeling van de Xerox Alto, een “PC” avant-la-lettre (8 jaar voordat de IBM PC op de markt kwam). Centrale vraag: waarom deed Xerox niets met al die prachtige uitvindingen? [9]

In deze biografie beschrijft Faggin zijn imposante carriere. Eea is behoorlijk technisch beschreven; blijkbaar gaat hij ervanuit dat de lezer dat allemaal weet. Dit is wat dat betreft zeker geen leerboek.
Hij is de hoofdontwerper te noemen van de eerste chip: de Intel 4004. En zijn handtekening staat ook op 2 opvolgers daarvan. Blunders met patenten en ander gedoe hebben er aanvankelijk voor gezorgt dat hem te weinig credit hiervoor ten deel vielen. Dat schrijft hij hier flink van zich af. De hoofdstukken over AI, consciousess, etc heb ik overgeslagen. Inspiratie voor een software project heb ik nog niet…
